Course Description
Your lighter just ran out of fuel and your matches are soaked. How are you supposed to get this fire going? Learning the plants and materials of the landscape can help you build a fire when your gear has failed! In this course, hosted by Bell Creek Nature School and led by Survival Guide Ryan Johnson, discuss the core principles and ancient history of friction fire. Build your own friction fire kit and practice using it to prepare for your next adventure.
Course Outline
Core concepts of fire starting and maintenance
Human history of friction fire
Demonstration of friction fire methods (hand drill and bow drill)
Basics of carving (safety demonstration included)
Bow drill practice and technique
Overview of flint and steel
Materials: Please bring lunch, fixed blade knife (extras will be available during class if you do not have one), water bottle & warm clothing for all weather conditions (especially rain)
