Late Spring Plant ID & Hot Tea ($45)

  • Burfoot Park 6927 Boston Harbor Road Northeast Olympia, WA, 98506 United States (map)

Late spring offers a bounty of plants for the northwest forager to learn about — let’s walk the trails at Burfoot Park to study the new shoots, needles, shrubs, and plants that can serve as prized local edibles! This in-field class will guide students towards confident identification through botany features and anatomy. As we meander through the woods, the instructors will also facilitate conversations around honorable harvesting and sustainable foraging. The outing will conclude with wild tea made from local plants!

This workshop will be led by naturalists Ryan Johnson and Licia Sahagun of Firecraft Northwest.

Foraging Note - This is a County Park location that does not allow foraging at this site. We will not be foraging items to take home, but rather using real-life demonstrations for plant identification and bring in native plants harvested from other locations for our tea.

Please bring a thermos or mug if you’d like to have a hot drink after we learn about the plants at this site.

Accessibility notes:

  • We will start at a covered picnic shelter to meet the group and spend a few minutes on basic foraging content and introductions

  • Our pace along the trail will be slow. The trail has several small undulating elevation changes of easy difficulty. We will walk down towards the beach and then return to the shelter to end the course, totaling less than 2 miles.

  • The park has restrooms and ample parking, please let us know if you ever have questions about outing accessibility!

  • This course is listed at 60+ minutes longer than some of other plant ID courses so we can have time to cover more plants, do a hiking loop down to the water, and enjoy tea together at the end of the program.
