Campfire Cooking and Fireside Food | Feb 1 | 10AM - 3PM

$85.00

It’s hard to beat the tastes and flavors of a hot cooked meal when you’re outdoors. If you are ready to be the next camp chef, this class is for you! In this workshop, discover the joy of cooking in the field and at camp using a variety of different hand-made wooden structures.

This half-day workshop begins with a lesson on cooking implements and configurations, like cast iron, stainless steel, or titanium, and how you can place them on or near a fire depending on your ingredients. We’ll then move on to our training for fire building —a hot coal base is essential for even heat. We’ll cover harvesting materials in the field to get your fire going, fire-starting strategies in the rain, and ideal fire configurations for cooking. Once our fires are lit, the instructors will train participants on cooking methods made from hand-carved wooden structures: roasting sticks, suspended systems, and tripods. Of course, all of this talk about food and cooking will include samples and demonstrations for class participants to make themselves and test out, like bannock, wild tea, and bacon (vegetarian options will also be offered).

We’ll conclude the class with a brief lesson on cooking alternatives during the fire ban season and send participants on their way with full bellies and new confidence for making fun meals on their next outing or adventure!

Class registration fees include tools, cookware, food items to sample, and supplies necessary for the session. Please bring a lunch to augment the sample and demonstration foods.

This class is at a State Park - please bring your Discover passes for parking at this site.
