Fire Starting and Ignition Basics | April 6 | 10:00-2:30 PM
Hone your fire-starting skills to prepare for the upcoming camping season! After an overview of fire-starting basics, participants will meander through the forests and learn which local plants and resources we have in the Pacific Northwest to use as tinder, followed by a training session with a variety of ignition methods to find success.
Outline of skills and lessons during this workshop:
Fire-starting basics, like fire lays (setups), finding dry materials, what fires need for success, and more
Local plants and materials that make great fire starters and accelerants
Build your own tinder bundle using a variety of found materials and use it to start a fire
Practice several different ignition techniques, including flint and steel and ferrocerium rods
Throughout the workshop, instructors will also share tips and tricks to successful fire starting even in inclement weather like cold, wind, and rain.
Participants will walk away ready to build their fires on upcoming adventures!
This course will take place on the east side of Capitol Forest campgrounds, about 25 minutes (or less) from downtown Olympia. The exact campsite will be distributed closer to the class date and is contingent upon reservations.
